Philip van Geest, VGI:

"2025 Started promising for day trading, but excitement may be short-lived"

"In mid-January, although availability is certainly not abundant due to the currently cold weather in Spain, trade remains sluggish," says Philip van Geest of Van Geest International (VGI). "Partly due to the slightly lower supply, prices are still above average to downright high, which is beneficial for producers in Spain and Morocco, among others."

He provides a brief market overview from a VGI perspective of the market earlier in January. "Tomatoes are selling for €8.50–€10 per box. Cherry tomatoes are expensive, with prices ranging from €11.50 to €12.50 per 9x250g, mainly due to retail commitments and low harvests. Spanish vine tomatoes are going for around €8.50, while Dutch exposed vine tomatoes reach €10."

"For Spanish red peppers, prices range between €10 and €12 per box, green between €12.50 and €10.50, and yellow peppers sell for €15 to €16.50 per box. The price of orange peppers, driven by overseas demand, is even above €18. Aubergine prices have been strong for several weeks, at €15, €16, and €17 per box. The first Dutch aubergines have also arrived. Traditionally, most of these are exported across the Atlantic," the exporter continues.

"The price of courgettes has risen slightly, from €6.50 to between €8.50 and €10. Cucumbers are currently arriving in smaller sizes and are still fetching €8, €8.50, or €9. Dutch (exposed) cucumbers are also available at similar prices. In terms of quality, they are excellent—dark green and long-lasting," says Philip.

"With Fruit Logistica in Berlin just around the corner, which somehow always triggers a market shift, prices will have to adjust," Philip predicts. "There will be no escaping that, especially considering prices are already lower in the UK and production will increase as the weather warms up."
