Drewry's Intra-Asia Container Index (IACI), a weighted average of regional spot container freight rates, fell 6% in the fortnight to 15 Jan 25 to $828 per 40ft container.
Freight rates exclude origin and destination terminal handling charges (all rates $US/40ft)
Drewry's Intra-Asia Container Index (IACI) decreased 6% to $828 per 40ft container in the first half of January. Currently, the IACI is 56% higher compared to the same period last year, indicating the continued strength of intra-Asian trade. We expect rates to decline slightly but remain within a stable range in the coming weeks.
Drewry's Intra-Asia Container Index (IACI) now provides spot container freight rates for major intra-Asia trade routes, offering a clearer picture of market trends in regional shipping. The index, which will be updated fortnightly, includes 18 route-specific indices representing individual shipping routes, along with a composite index. All rates are reported in USD per 40-foot container.
The index tracks freight rates between key ports across Asia, including routes between Shanghai and major trade hubs such as Busan, Ho Chi Minh City, Jakarta, Jawaharlal Nehru Port, Kaohsiung, Laem Chabang, Manila, Singapore, Tanjung Pelepas, and Yokohama. It also covers reciprocal routes from these locations back to Shanghai, as well as connections from Shanghai to Jebel Ali.
Drewry's new index aims to provide transparency and insights into the evolving freight rate dynamics within Asia, helping businesses and shipping operators make informed decisions. The data reflects real-time market fluctuations, offering a crucial reference point for stakeholders in the shipping and logistics industry.
