"Although these varieties are well known and marketed in Europe, they still have a long way to go in Spain"

Red Bouquet, Anecoop's new project for red oranges

Anecoop is launching its new project Red Bouquet, a brand for red oranges featuring a selection of new varieties and which, remarkably, is bringing back the ones traditionally grown in Valencia. With demand for red oranges on the rise, the company aims to grow in the domestic market, as well as consolidate its position in countries that are already familiar with the product. The agri-food cooperative, which is one of the world's leading citrus operators, expects to sell around three million kilos of red oranges this season.

The Red Bouquet project, which will be presented at the next edition of Fruit Logistica in Berlin from February 5th to 7th, has been developed in Anecoop's experimental field in the town of Museros, in the province of Valencia, which is mainly devoted to research and innovation in open ground crops and whose results are shared by the company with its grower partners.

"There are two goals behind the cultivation of this citrus fruit range: on the one hand, the recovery of historic red orange varieties that were traditionally grown in Valencia and which had almost disappeared, and on the other hand, to incorporate new complementary varieties, thus guaranteeing wider and more homogenous commercial programs for this type of orange," says Anecoop.

After several years with different varieties under study, Anecoop has selected a few of them to become part of its red-orange range, including the Ippólito, which is easily recognized for its intense external and internal color and its larger size, and the Tarocco Rosso. Both of these are part of the line marketed under the new Red Bouquet brand.

"Although these varieties are well known and marketed in Europe, they still have a long way to go in Spain, because for many years it has been difficult to find them on the market. Besides, they are arriving at a very attractive commercial moment, with consumers receptive to new products, both for table oranges and juicing oranges," says the cooperative.

With the demand on the rise, Anecoop is focusing on diversifying into different distribution channels in the domestic market, as well as consolidating its presence in countries already familiar with the product, such as Italy, France, and Germany. "In these countries, our oranges are doing well thanks, among other factors, to the consolidation of our Bouquet brand. With this line, we are adding more variety to the citrus brand's range and extending the marketing season," they say.

The president of Anecoop, Alejandro Monzón, says that "Fruit Logistica is positioning itself as a big stage to showcase the Red Bouquet on an international level. The red oranges marketed under this new brand are the result of our efforts to adapt the range of varieties to consumer tastes and demands, extend the season, expand the range, and recover traditional flavors. The aim: is to consolidate the competitiveness of our citrus around the world and improve our growers' financial results. In fact, our producers are our raison d'être."

According to recent studies carried out within the framework of the collaboration agreement between Anecoop and the Complutense University of Madrid, the red orange varieties marketed by Anecoop have a high vitamin C, fiber, and anthocyanin content, as well as antioxidants. Further studies are being carried out to gain a better understanding of their nutritional composition and the benefits they provide.

Due to the accumulation of certain antioxidant bioactive compounds, red oranges have different aesthetic, taste, and nutritional properties. With a reddish internal and external color, they are in high demand for their sweet taste, their high juice content, and above all, for their antioxidant properties, linked to the considerable presence of anthocyanins. "They represent a novelty for the youngest consumers and an alternative with a more sentimental value for the classic consumer," says Anecoop.
