Strawberry brand Odavi enters wine market with non-alcoholic bubbles

For several years, Odavi has been producing drinks using some of its Class II strawberries. Since last month, the company has expanded its offerings to include two types of non-alcoholic sparkling beverages, spokesperson Marie-Louise Raats told RTL News.

The idea originated from a request by the logistics company that Genson works with. Genson, a major soft fruit company, is where Odavi has its roots. The logistics company also transports fruit from other growers, including rejected produce like grapes and blackberries. "They asked us if we could create something from that," Raats explained. After successfully producing liqueur and gin, Odavi decided to enter the wine market. Their sparkling wine is made with strawberries and raspberries.

More drinks may be launched in the future. "Our focus is on reusing residual streams as efficiently as possible, which not only generates revenue but is also beneficial for the environment," Raats noted. Additionally, if production scales up sufficiently, Odavi has ambitions to start distilling drinks in-house.

Annually, Genson produces 5.5 million kilos of strawberries from outdoor cultivation and greenhouses. Approximately 300,000 kilos of these strawberries are rejected. While some of this rejected fruit is used to make drinks, the majority is sent to a company that processes it into concentrate for the food industry.
