Exporters from Fiji are encountering obstacles in entering the Australian market for fresh ginger, primarily due to concerns over nematode risks. Despite these challenges, Fiji's Agriculture Minister Vatimi Rayalu has reported progress in navigating these barriers. Specifically, the Navua-based Vinaka Farm, known for its organic ginger, successfully exported eight tonnes to Australia in the last fiscal year, underscoring efforts to maintain Fiji's presence in the Australian market.
Rayalu highlighted the government's collaboration with the Ministry of Trade and industry stakeholders to enhance the production of organic ginger, aiming to improve Fiji's global competitiveness and facilitate market access in Australia. The bilateral quarantine agreement protocol for ginger supply remains in effect, as the Ministry continues its implementation.
Addressing the difficulties of market entry in Australia, the Minister noted the high international esteem for Fiji ginger, but acknowledged the entry challenges. Plans are underway to assist local agro-processors in increasing their capacity for adding value to ginger and boosting purchases from local farmers. Furthermore, discussions with Australian authorities and stakeholders are ongoing, aiming to expand Fiji's market share for processed ginger and explore new market opportunities both locally and internationally.
