Trade activities between India and Bangladesh via land ports in West Bengal are anticipated to return to normalcy, despite the political unrest in Bangladesh. Officials reported some goods movement at one of these ports on Wednesday.
A crucial meeting was held at Petrapole, South Asia's largest land port, to discuss the transportation of goods. The Border Security Force's Director General reviewed the border situation due to the crisis in Bangladesh. According to a Carrying & Forwarding Agents Welfare Association representative, cargo movement towards Bangladesh has commenced from Ghojadanga, thanks to stability in Bhomra.
Preparations for cargo export are underway in Malda's Mahadipur. However, an official from Benapole port in Bangladesh indicated that trade has not resumed, citing concerns from the Indian side. The meeting aimed to address these issues and normalize trade. India's exports to Bangladesh saw a decrease from $12.21 billion in 2022-23 to $11 billion in 2023-24, reflecting the significance of the trade relationship between the two nations.
