Senator Marshall joined Market Day Report on RFD-TV to discuss the closure of two major rail crossings at the southern border in Texas, leaving millions of dollars in international commerce stranded on the tracks.
Below are some highlights of the interview:
“Certainly this administration creates a crisis and then their solution creates a new crisis. In this case we think about what’s happening at the border today. 10,000, 11,000, 12,000 people crossing our border every day now. And really the Border Patrol was set up to maybe handle 1,000 a day at the most. So the White House has pulled these inspectors, the Border Patrol inspectors, for the trains out of their regular job to go help babysit all these people that are coming across the border.”
“We are shutting down our most successful trade agreement, USMCA, Mexico is now our number one trade partner, almost a trillion dollars a year we’re trading with them. A lot of it goes via the trains… Boy if you’re a farmer, you just feel like this White House is sticking their thumb in your eye again.”
“They’ve given us high interest rates, high diesel fuel, high fertilizer prices, they turn their back on biofuels. They’ve not done one major trade agreement and now they’re blowing up USMCA and this trickles all the way back of course to all your farmers and ranchers that are listening.”
“I just want to point out, this is going to impact much more than agriculture. We build airplanes and jets in Wichita, Kansas. We build cars in Kansas City, Kansas as well. And when they’re building a car, or an airplane, a jet, that process goes back and forth, back and forth across into Mexico.”
“We’re not going to be able to get the fruits and vegetables back from Mexico. That’s going to impact the grocery stores and exacerbate inflation, to your point earlier. This is indeed a ripple effect, and it’s going to impact every American, it’ll probably take 30-60 days even if they solved the problem today, it’ll take 30 to 60 days to unwind the problem, the backlog we have with these trains now.”
