The Moroccan avocado campaign is progressing against fierce competition from South American origins, notably Colombia. Abdellah El Yamlahi, CEO of Export Optimum, reports on the season's progress.
El Yamlahi told FreshPlaza: "We've been exporting the Hass variety for 3 weeks now. The campaign started with high early demand, which then calmed down as competition from Colombia kicked in, and prices fell below those of last month. Despite this, we've managed to export the same quantities as the same period last season, if not a little more, and we're expecting demand to pick up again in January."
Moroccan exporters are confronted with South American competition especially in the medium-caliber segment, says El Yamlahi. "And this season, we have more medium calibers than last season, which complicates things. In fact, we have 70-80% of sizes 18 to 26."
"Current demand for Moroccan avocados comes mainly from Spain, the Netherlands and Germany. At Export Optimum, most of our volumes go to the Netherlands and Germany," adds the exporter.
On the Moroccan market, prices have also dropped as a result of Storm Bernard that hit Morocco, causing fruit to fall and find its way to the local market. El Yamlahi says, "Avocados are now in abundance on the local market and prices are starting to fall."
Despite this, El Yamlahi remains confident, "The indicators remain in the green. The market situation will improve later, and we are maintaining our forecasts for a successful campaign. At Export Optimum, we will maintain our position as Morocco's leading avocado exporter, thanks to a satisfied and loyal customer base and growers who prefer to do business with us."
