Locals boycotting carrot growers over water usage

In California's Cuyama Valley, a water war has erupted between carrot growers and the community, leading residents to launch a campaign urging everyone to boycott carrots.

The battle revolves around water rights and dwindling groundwater levels, with carrot-growing giants Grimmway Farms and Bolthouse Farms facing backlash for their heavy water use. The companies, along with other entities, filed a lawsuit in 2021 seeking a court determination of water usage rights, resulting in financial strain on small farmers and property owners.

Following public outrage and a carrot boycott, Grimmway Farms and Bolthouse Farms withdrew from the lawsuit, expressing a commitment to reducing water use and participating in the groundwater management plan.

However, residents and smaller farmers remain skeptical, continuing the boycott. The two carrot companies were responsible for 65% of measured pumping reported to the local groundwater agency, highlighting the scale of their water usage.
