Pomegranate prices surged to Rs 800 per kg (€8.80) in the Rahata Bazaar Committee near Narayangaon, Pune registering a 7 fold rise in prices within just 15 days. This comes as relief to farmers since the past three months were particularly difficult owing to soaring temperatures and water scarcity.
The new prices may come as a relief to farmers who struggled to protect their crops amid unprecedented heat in Solapur district experienced over the past three months. They resorted to covering the pomegranate trees with cloth. The crops also faced threats from water shortage and occurrence of black spots on the fruit. However, farmers strove to protect their costs through these weather extremities.
