Annapolis Valley farmers are breathing a sigh of relief, as the damages caused by post-tropical storm Lee are not too bad. Lee made landfall on Long Island, Digby County, on September 16. Winds were recorded at 93 km/h in Greenwood and 56 km/h in Kentville.
Emily Lutz, executive director of the Nova Scotia Fruit Growers Association: “It was not as bad as we were expecting.” She said the wind knocked some apples off the trees, estimating between five and 10 per cent depending on the variety and location in the Valley. She said there were also some downed trees and trellis, “but nothing like we were worried about.”
According to Grape Growers Association of Nova Scotia president Steve Ells, there was some trellis damage in a few vineyards in the Annapolis Valley, but “not a lot of damage to the vines and the crop itself right here.”
