The members of HORTYFRUTA, Andalusia's Fruit and Vegetable Inter-branch Organization, held a meeting in the province of Granada this week to analyze the beginning of the campaign and the behavior of fruit and vegetable products, especially zucchini and cucumber.
The prices of these products have fallen significantly over the same period of last year. We are in the first weeks of the campaign, and cucumber and zucchini production is increasing. However, the marketing of these products only stands at around 2% in week 38 (September 18 to 24, 2023).
Given this situation, HORTYFRUTA's Crisis Manual foresees the activation of a "yellow alert," during which they carry out a special and daily analysis and monitoring of the behavior of both products. If the situation worsens, the standard extension mechanism, in force since last season, will be put in place, which would lead to the suspension of the marketing of the second categories for both products.
It's worth noting that this crisis management mechanism is the result of a joint, consensual, and coordinated work between all the member organizations of the inter-branch organization (Alhóndigas de Andalucía, APROA, ASAJA Andalucía, Provincial Association of Agricultural Cooperatives of Seville, Association of Cooperatives of Granada, COAG Andalucía, COEXPHAL, Agro-Food Cooperatives of Andalusia, ECOHAL Andalusia, and UPA Andalusia), and that it was already used during the last campaign for long black aubergines.
