Rhode Island pumpkin, apple and peach growers said showers and downpours this season were not bad for their produce. For instance, Brian Shields' family, the newest owners of AppleLand Orchard in Smithfield, said their apple season is looking good: "The apples have been growing great this year. The previous owners are kind of tutoring us and showing us the ropes, and they said they haven't seen a crop this good in years. But the rain has been great for the crops but it's also had its issues too."
Like other orchards, their peaches didn't do too hot this year. "Late in the spring we got a frost, and the peaches just really don't like the frost," said Shields. "So they got locked out this year, no buds on any of the trees."
