Parrino: "Exhaustive labels are very important to German-speaking markets"

Satisfactory market for Sicilian organic tomatoes in Germany

OP Agrologica, well-known for its organic production, also boasts a table grape range. FreshPlaza has talked about it with Claudio Parrino, sales manager, who reports that "together with table grapes, tomatoes rank first when it comes to commercialized volumes."

"Our main markets are Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, but we commercialize practically all over Europe. As usual, what works in our favor is our extensive and qualified presence in these markets, where organic products constitute an important added value. That is why we have a strong penetration ability in the markets of the highest value."

"The 2022/23 tomato season was rather unbalanced: the high prices, often above €2/kg at production, somehow livened up commercialization, which is something we had needed for years. Quotations are anyway satisfactory at the moment."

"Our range currently sees the presence of tomatoes from various segments, including smooth round (bunch) tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, plum and oblong tomatoes. Our reference channels also include Italian retail chains such as Coop, Esselunga, Lidl, and Megamark, whereas abroad, you can find us in Aldi and other chains. We hold the Naturland, Demeter, BioSuisse, GRASP, GolbalGAP, IFS etc... certifications. We'd like to point out how, this year, our summer productions came from the hills in south-eastern Sicily, in Agro di Chiaramonte Gulfi (RG). The ventilation of greenhouses avoided thermal stress to plants and prevented the formation of diseases caused by heat and humidity (downy mildew, etc.), meaning treatments could be drastically reduced."

"The possibility of switching from one area to the other based on weather conditions and the season provides us with precious quality elements during harvesting and commercialization. Consumers, especially German-speaking ones, expect to find a whole series of information on the label testifying to the health of the produce and spend time reading the certifications and cultivation methods. They make a choice based on elements that can improve their nutrition and lifestyle. These concepts still seem abstract in Italy and are considered as superstructures by operators, but it is a way to better qualify the produce to maximize profit with the certainty of having introduced to the market products that are healthy and good to eat."
