UK: Ocado cuts prices of 200 more items
Ocado is cutting the price of a further 200 branded and own-label items as part of its Big Price Drop. Heinz Beans have been reduced by 25p to £3.75, Walkers Ready Salted Crisps and Ocado own-range easy peelers are both down by 10p, and Copella Apple Juice has seen a 29% reduction from £2.80 to £2. Snackable items included in the cuts, such as fruit, have also been reduced in price by an average of 10%.
Food delivery startup Getir to cut 11% of workers in global restructuring
Turkish grocery delivery firm Getir announced a global restructuring, saying it plans to cut 2,500 jobs across five countries, or 10.9% of its total workforce. Getir will continue to operate in Turkey, the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United States, the company said in a statement. Last month, it announced its exit from Italy, Spain, and Portugal.
Britain's gloomy weather dents supermarket sales growth into August - NIQ
Sales growth at British supermarkets slowed in August, industry data showed, reflecting lower inflation as well as a hit to demand from unsettled, unseasonably wet weather. Market researcher NIQ said supermarket sales on a value basis grew 7.2% in the four weeks to August 12 - the lowest growth since January and down from 8.9% in its July data set.
Australia: Woolworths posts profit rise as price gains offset cost hikes
Woolworths' underlying full-year profit rose 4.6% and met analyst forecasts, as price increases by Australia's top grocer more than offset rising costs, sending its shares higher. Woolworths, one of the country's biggest employers, which makes up nearly 40% of all supermarket sales in Australia, said profit excluding non-recurring items such as revaluations of non-core business interests came in at A$1.62bln ($1.04bln) for the year.
Delhaize and Carrefour lower prices in Belgium, Lidl simplifies store concept
In ads published in all the major Belgian newspapers, Delhaize announced that it is offering discounts on hundreds of private-label products from the end of this week. Carrefour Belgium has also reduced the prices of a whole range of products in its Express, Market, and Hypermarket stores and via its Carrefour.be online platform. Until 10 September, promotions will be offered on school supplies, food, and non-food purchases. Many fruits and vegetables will be sold for less than €1, and it will be possible to earn additional points. Elsewhere, Lidl is planning to simplify its store concept in Belgium, with the aim that all 310 stores in the country have the same layout. Isabelle Colbrandt, the spokesperson for Lidl Belgium, explained to Flemish daily Het Laatste Nieuws that the aim is for customers to recognize a Lidl when they enter. "Whether in Lommel or Antwerp, in concrete terms, you will encounter the bakery, fruit, and vegetable department first when you enter the store," she explained.

Big C Supercenter has acquired grocery chain AbouThai's 24 stores in Hong Kong and will rebrand them as Big C, CEO Aswin Techajareonvikul says. The supermarket chain, which is owned by one of Thailand's richest families, will seek a dual listing in Hong Kong and Bangkok as soon as the fourth quarter.
Brexit: Asda is first NI supermarket to use 'Not for EU' label
Asda has become the first supermarket to start "Not for EU" labeling on some of its food in Northern Ireland. The labeling is a requirement of the Windsor Framework, the revised Brexit deal for Northern Ireland. It is not officially required until the start of October and is due to be rolled out across the rest of the UK in October 2024.

Confectionery wholesaler Hancocks is celebrating sales of vegan and veggie stock after installing a dedicated aisle in their Bradford depot. Hancocks Bradford store manager Linda Haley said: "We are really happy to share our brand new dedicated vegan and veggie aisle. We are the first Hancocks store to install this, as it is super important for our customer base".
Australia: Supermarket superprofits slammed
Farmers have welcomed the Federal Treasurer's announcement on tackling big business market power after the big two supermarkets posted enormous profits. Coles announced a $1.098bln profit, while Woolworths announced a $1.62bln profit. NSW Farmers President Xavier Martin said it was very disappointing that every one of those dollars came out of an Australian's pocket at a time when families were struggling to make ends meet, repeating calls for action from the federal government. "Families are facing huge cost of living pressures while farmers are getting paid cents on the dollar for their produce, and the two biggest companies in the middle of the fresh food supply chain are getting fat," Mr. Martin said.
