The Smart Agriculture Center called Greenport Zaragoza will be highly innovative and technological and will aim to have international projection. It will be devoted to the organic production of fruits and vegetables throughout the year and will cover an area of more than 900 hectares. It will be located in the municipalities of San Mateo and Villanueva de Gállego, next to the pharmaceutical facilities.
The choice of this location has been carefully studied by investors, who were looking for a place close to the railroad that connects with Huesca, the highways to France, and the Levante. It was also desired to have an easy connection with the city's airport through the Z-40, given that this is the third most important airport in Spain when it comes to the movement of goods.
The project involves the construction of glass greenhouses, fresh produce processing centers, a logistics center, a hotel, training facilities, and a bioenergy and trigeneration plant, which will use heat, cold, and CO₂ to improve crop conditions.
Greenport Zaragoza will cost an estimated €4.5 billion and is expected to be fully operational by the third quarter of 2026. Projected annual turnover could amount to €15 billion. It is expected to generate 4,000 direct jobs and 8,500 indirect jobs.
In addition to the main investors (RCP, Indico Investments, and Asociados de Portugal), the project will also be backed by Siemens Energy, which will act as a technological partner, as well as by local companies such as Urbener, devoted to energy trade, and Estructuras Industriales Monzón, a manufacturer of structures and components.
