Panama exported its first shipment of ginger to Spain. The Panamanian R & M agro-export company shipped 19,000 kilos of ginger from the production areas of Chepo.
According to Calixto Him Arcia, an agronomist from the Ministry of Agricultural Development (Mida), the ginger was grown by low-income families living in hard-to-reach areas of the Chepo district, such as Maje, Cañita, Torti, Quebrada Cali, San Jose, Ambrolla, and Río Ruben, for whom ginger cultivation is an important source of income.
During the export process, R & M received cooperation from the Mida, via the National Directorate of Agribusiness, the regional directorates of Panama West and Panama East, and the Institute of Agricultural Marketing (IMA).
"In addition to exporting pineapples, R & M is interested in other lines, such as avocado, banana, cassava, and banana," Him Arcia stated.
