DA weighs option to import onions anew to ensure supply

Philippines: No more imported onions, but local stock 'enough' for now

Last Friday, the Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Plant and Industry (DA-BPI) announced that there is no more supply of imported red and white onions in the country. However, despite the depletion of the supply of imported onions, DA-BPI Spokesperson Jose Diego Roxas said the country has an ample supply of local red and white onions for now.

“The Bureau of Plant Industry estimates the country’s supply of white onions as of April, at 12,843 tons, will last until September while the supply of red onions, at 98,393 tons, may be sufficient to cover local demand until November,” he said.

Still, the Department of Agriculture (DA) is looking into the possible importation of white and red onions during “lean months” or no harvest season this year, a Department of Agriculture (DA) official revealed. The import plan seeks to ensure the adequacy of the supply of the commodity and prevent a possible price increase.
