With the support of the Government of Pará, farmers in Monte Alegre in the Lower Amazon are returning to planting silver bananas (Musa spp. Família Musaceae) after almost 30 years of stagnation in the production chain. In the 1980s, Monte Alegre became the largest state producer of the variety, according to mapping by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), but lost everything due to outbreaks of Panama disease and black sigatoka.
A project by the local office of the Technical Assistance and Rural Extension Company of the State, in partnership with the City Hall, since 2021, seeks to revitalize the activity based on the introduction and distribution of seedlings resistance and the strengthening of good practices. In all, 60 families from the Ari, Três Bocas, Terra Preta and Serra Azul communities have already received a total of 5,000 seedlings.
