Lower eggplant supply from Honduras

The supply of eggplants out of Honduras has been steady but is also about to be slightly lower in volume. “It has good volume right now and production year-round. The volume is more or less the same as last year. However, next week it will go down,” said Lina Turizo of R&R Fresh Produce.

Generally, between December and January, R&R was receiving between 700-900 boxes per container and was getting three containers a week. “In the last two weeks though I’m only receiving two containers a week and now only 500-600 boxes of eggplant per container,” says Turizo, noting rainy weather could be the reason for the short-term lower production. At the same time, the demand for Honduran products is stronger, given the pricing of Mexican eggplants.

Mexican production
Turizo says Mexico and Honduras are the two countries where most of the eggplant volume comes from. “Quality, in general, has been okay,” she says. “Sometimes when it rains a lot, there are quality problems, but it has been okay.”

Meanwhile, demand is also steady for eggplant, and the vegetable is moving well. “The price has been stable,” says Turizo, noting usually at this time of the year, pricing goes up on eggplant. “Over the past few weeks, I had been told the price would go up because the Mexican price is higher right now, and the volume in Honduras is not that high. However, everyone’s been keeping the same price for the past two to three weeks.”
