Ozone used to remove ethylene in cold rooms

Miatech's Bio Turbo systems uses ozone to decompose the ethylene in cold storage rooms while also eliminating harmful airborne pathogens like mold and fungus spores reducing the amount of spoiled produce in a warehouse. One company where the Bio Turbo systems are installed is Haeusler Frischeservice Company, a fruit and vegetable supplier in Immenstadt, in Southern Germany. They supply a variety of fruits and vegetables to local businesses such as hotels, restaurants, and catering companies.

In September 2020, they installed a BT300 in one of their mixed products cold rooms. With good results, they gradually covered all of their refrigerated area with Bio Turbo systems. From the smallest BT100i inside their delivery trucks to the largest BT6000 in their sales warehouse.

Florian Pichl, Managing Director of Haeusler Frischeservice: "Our customer list includes some very high-end gastronomes with exclusive needs and requirements, on which we do our best to fulfill them. We carry a wide range of produce, from apples grown in our region and local herbs and greens to imported Mediterranean fruits like watermelons, citrus, and stone fruits. We also import tropical fruits like mangoes and pineapples, among others. Keeping all these different produce items in ideal storage condition can be quite a challenge. Apples and tropical fruits, for example, emit a lot of ethylene which can accelerate the ripening process and reduce the quality of more sensitive produce items like kiwi fruits and green vegetables.

"Miatech's Bio Turbo systems have proven to be an ideal solution for this problem. The Bio Turbo utilizes ozone to decompose the ethylene, but unlike other ozone systems, the process takes place inside the unit, and there is no ozone released in our cold rooms making this solution absolutely safe for our personnel. As a bonus feature, it also eliminates harmful airborne pathogens like mold and fungus spores reducing the amount of spoiled produce in our warehouse. Our fruits and vegetables are fresher, last longer, and we have significant reductions on spoiled items."
