Ralf Laux, Managing Director of Erwin Laux Ltd & Co.:

French imported lettuce price rises slightly

"The demand, as well as the quality of French lettuces, is very good this winter. Compared to previous years, the price is also quite low," informs us Ralf Laux, managing director of Erwin Laux Ltd & Co. from Landau, informs us. Overall, larger quantities are also available, which is also reflected in the pricing. Overall, Laux had to adjust his prices by 15 to 20 percent, while he could offer 20-25 percent more of the salads. "Right now, prices for the colorful lettuces are also picking up slightly. This is probably also related to the supply of iceberg and other lettuces, where prices are at a high and stable level."

As a rule, Laux offers the French imported lettuces between the beginning of November and about the end of March. These include Lollo Rosso, Lollo Bionda, oak leaf green as well as oak leaf red. His customers are mainly wholesalers and restaurants in the vicinity.

There have been no delivery problems or other complications so far. "Towards spring or the end of the season, we expect rather lower import volumes from France, as local farmers will plant less in view of the price situation," Laux said. As in many European countries, there had been an extreme drought in France. In view of the drought, there were also major problems with the quality and shelf life of Spanish onions.

Overall, however, the wholesaler's business stood at a level of 80-85 percent compared to the pre-Corona period, he said. "Whether we will reach our 100 percent again remains questionable. After all, many things have also become more expensive."
