According to Samir Singh, business promoter for Indian grape exporter Mersel Foods, the grape season in India was delayed for a few weeks due to the weather conditions in the vineyards: “The grape season has started slow, as expected, because the pruning was delayed by about two weeks in most of the vineyards. This delay was caused by the extended rainy season last summer. Export volumes will pick up starting from week 6, when grapes with good brix will become available. The harvest this year has been of good quality and there is sufficient volume available.”
Singh states that as there aren’t a lot of grapes form other origins on the market, demand for Indian grapes is on a solid level. “There is a good demand for Indian grapes from European markets as quality standards have been improving year by year. The fact that there are not a lot of grapes from other origins in the market certainly helps. Currently the prices are on the higher side, but they are stable for the time being, as volumes are limited. That said, we do hope and expect the prices will ease within a couple of weeks.”
In terms of the export volumes to Europe, Singh does expect to ship more grapes to the European market this season than they did last year: “Should the weather conditions for the remainder of the season be as good as it has been so far, the season will be very good, both in terms of quality and quantities. When looking at India’s export volumes towards Europe, we do expect that total export volumes will exceed the last year’s volume, which was 105,827 metric tons,” he concludes.
