Portugal: Jerónimo Martins posts 21.5% growth in group sales in FY 2022
Portuguese retail group Jerónimo Martins has reported 21.5% year-on-year growth in group sales to €25.4bln in its financial year 2022, according to preliminary figures. Strong performance across all banners drove like-for-like sales to 19.6%, the company added. In the fourth quarter, sales increased by 23.0% (up 26.0% at constant exchange rates) to €7.0bln with like-for-like sales of 21.4%.

Just Eat and Sainsbury’s partner up for grocery delivery in the UK
Just Eat, the UK’s leading food delivery app, has launched a new partnership with Sainsbury’s, marking the platform’s second tie-up with one of the UK’s ‘Big Four’ grocery brands. The partnership will launch with more than 175 stores by the end of February in locations including London, Edinburgh and Bristol, with plans to roll out to many more cities across 2023.

UK's M&S plans to open 20 new stores in Britain, the Times reports
British retailer Marks & Spencer (M&S) plans to open 20 new stores creating 3,400 jobs throughout Britain, The Times reported. The 138-year old clothing and food group will open eight "full-line" stores in shopping centres such as the Bullring, Birmingham, and the Trafford Centre, Manchester, as well in as retail parks and high streets, the newspaper said. It also will open 12 food halls, including in Stockport, Barnsley and the North Ayrshire seaside town of Largs, Scotland.

French retailers oppose proposed law on trade negotiations
Several French retail groups including Auchan, Carrefour, Groupe Casino, Cora, E.Leclerc, Intermarché, Lidl, Système U and Netto have warned of the consequences of a new trade negotiation bill proposed by the government. The groups believe that the proposed law would 'prevent negotiation trade for the benefit of very large manufacturers, and which will dramatically and sustainably fuel inflation', according to a joint press release.

Sanjay Ghodawat Group’s FMCG arm Ghodawat Consumer Limited (GCL) has acquired Delhi-based startup To Be Honest (TBH) for an undisclosed amount. With this, TBH’s entire team will join GCL and continue to develop a portfolio of healthy snacking food. The startup will also become a part of GCL’s Impulse division. Founded in 2017 by IIT and IIM graduates Mayank Gupta, Ritika Agrawal and Anuj Ghanghoria, TBH sells vegetable and fruit-based snacks across India.

Metro Italia sets new sales record in 2022
The Italian division of German wholesaler Metro closed its financial year 2021-2022 with 'record' sales of €1.8bln, up 35% from 2020-2021, while profit reached €331mln. UK: Spike in food waste app downloads as cost-of-living crisis bites
Food waste app Gander says it has seen a surge in downloads and in-store usage over the past year. The app aims to reduce wastage from the retail sector by advertising the availability of reduced-price food items in local stores. India's DMart Q3: Profit up by 6.6% to ₹589.68 cr, revenue rises by 25%
Avenue Supermarts reported consolidated profit after tax rose by 6.7% to ₹589.68 crore for the quarter ended December 2022. This is against a profit of ₹552.56 in the corresponding quarter last fiscal. Radhakishan Damani-owned Avenue Supermarts, which runs DMart chain, reported revenue from operations were up by 25% to ₹11,569.05 as against ₹9,217.76 in the corresponding quarter in last fiscal.
