Egyptian citrus seeks outlets in Australia

In their quest to diversify their markets, more Egyptian citrus exporters, such as Capital Agro, are targeting the Australian and North American markets. Last year, Capital Agro exported 55% of its production to Europe, 40% to Asia, and 5% to the Middle East, but the scarcity of large-sized fruits that characterized this season in Egypt calls for a change in export destinations.

Mr. Fady Adly, Assistant Regional Export Sales Manager of Capital Agro explains: "The volumes have increased by 7-8% this season. Large fruits are rare and small and medium fruits are more common. We're having demand for large fruit from the UK, Brazil, Singapore, Vietnam, and the Netherlands and very limited demand from China. India and the Middle East are the main regions that have good demand for medium-sized fruit. We also expect significant potential growth in the North American and Australian markets".

M. Fady Adly describes his operations: "We run a 365-day export operation. By virtue of being an Egyptian company, a large part of our exports are citrus fruits". In its citrus line, the company exports Navel (week 49 to week 4), Baladi (week 49 to week 2), and then Valencia (week 51 to week 4). Capital Agro also exports high quality sweet potatoes until the end of February. And after the citrus season, we start grape loads in mid-May. In addition to other fresh produce, Capital Agro also supplies IQF fruits and vegetables.

To ensure desired presence in the North American and Australian markets, the company relies on its premium product range and its sense of quality. M. Fady explains: "We pay special attention to our farms, as they are the mainstay of the vegetable and fruit business. We have adopted a farm-to-fork TQM system by following the product and making quality checks in key points for the production line: harvest, departure from the farm, transportation process, sorting, packing, storage, and shipment to the customer.

"We have successfully obtained the quality control and management certificates including Global G.A.P, GRASP, SMETA "SEDEX", FSCC OC, BRC "Global Food Standards'' IS09001, IS022000, IS045000 and shortly we will acquire TESCO certification as well ", concludes M. Fady Adly.
