A Quebec-based company hopes to become one of the global leaders in vertical farming. On Tuesday, Winter Farm announced it raised $46 million thanks to multiple investors and Quebec’s government which will be used to help produce around 1,000 tons of strawberries every year.
They plan on doing this by building six 600 m2 vertical farms, which grow crops in vertically stacked layers, adding onto their two already in operation. “The arrival of new partners is a vote of confidence in favor of Winter Farm’s industrial potential and our ability to deliver superior quality fruit,” Alain Brisebois, president and CEO of Winter Farm, said.
Winter Farm explained this will not only help with production but allow them to use between 20 to 25 times less space compared to open field production, recover 90 percent of irrigation water used, and limit greenhouse gases.
