A project led by Angelica Tovar Ramirez, a university student and member of the Guiando Territorio Foundation, will produce up to 3,500 units of organic Cogollo de Tudela lettuce a week in the Colombian town of Usme.
The project, which began in 2017 with the support of the mayor's office of Usme and the Andi Foundation, has opened the way to direct marketing without intermediaries.
"The project broadened our horizons. Up until now, producers only sold their products in the market of Corabastos. It changed our view on cultivation methods and we started with a planting schedule to have a constant harvest and to meet the expectations of the market," Tovar stated.
The project consists of six cultivation units, each with five people. "We harvest organic products because we do not use artificial fertilizers or plant protection products. We care for the environment, for example by using our own compost. That helps us enormously," Tovar added.
