In recent years, in China, as the love for healthy functional fruits has gradually increased, consumers have become more and more aware of figs, and their demand is also increasing. However, the variety of figs on the market is relatively limited, and it is difficult to subdivide targeted varieties for different consumer groups and channels, and so to effectively meet the diverse needs of different customers. Ms. Chen Junmiao from Beijing Guoranguomei Agricultural Development Co., Ltd. shared her insights with Freshplaza on the market development of figs this season.
"Our planting bases are located in Yunnan, Zhejiang and Hebei, and the variety is mainly Bojihong. At present, we are operating and promoting the Zizuan fig. After two years of trial planting and data collection, the advantages of this variety are obvious. It will officially enter the commercial promotion period in 2022. The market effect is very good, and the demand for seedlings is strong. " Chen said.
When asked about the market advantages of this new variety, she said, "Compared with other agricultural products, figs are not resistant to storage and transportation, so we can only adopt the method of harvesting in advance to prolong the storage and transportation time. Therefore, many fresh fig products sold on the market have not reached the best taste. The appearance of the Zizuan fig completely overcomes this defect. The flower core is slender, the middle is tight, and the peel is strong. The storage period after ripening on the tree is 1.5 times that of the Bojihong fig. The Brix of the fruit can reach 22.6 when it is harvested at 80% ripeness. In addition, the purple-black anthocyanin content of the peel of this variety is high, which better caters to consumers' recognition."
The figs of Beijing Guoranguomei Agricultural Development Co., Ltd. can be supplied uninterrupted throughout the year, and the peak production season is from July to November. The frequent occurrence of extreme weather in many places this year has had a greater impact on figs, especially in the Sichuan production area, where fig trees have suffered serious production losses due to dehydration and leaf fall. Overall, the 2022 production season will be about 30% less than the 2021 production.
This year, only small amounts of Zizuan figs are on the market, and the selling price is around 136 yuan/kg, and the feedback from consumers is very good. This season is mainly to meet the market's demand for Zizuan figs and to create an off-seasonal advantageous production area for this new variety in Sanya to increase its supply.
At this stage, the sales channels of the company are mainly wholesale markets and direct supply channels. Next year, a large number of Zizuan figs will be launched, and it is planned to focus on e-commerce channels, giving full play to the advantages of the figs, which are resistant to storage and transportation and have a good taste. In order to allow more consumers to eat fresh figs, this year most of the suppliers are using small-sized refined packagings, such as the best-selling 1-piece fig king, 4-piece fresh figs, and 8-piece sharing packs.
