"We didn't even have time to get organized. All the product that
recently arrived from our growers had gone straight out the door in no time. In less than two hours we found a destination for our 300 cartons of strawberries," said Maria Ferrara (pictured here) of Italian fruit and vegetable wholesaler Fe.Vi. Frutta.
"It was the first big supply and with it we can announce the start of the new strawberry season. We have 5 varieties: RedSayra, NSG-203, Limvalnera, Fortuna and Plared 1075. We shipped the fruit to several wholesale markets in northern Italy, mainly in Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna and Friuli-Venezia Giuli. Each customer received about 40 cartons. Average selling prices were similar to 2021 (about €15 per carton), but demand is higher than a year ago. We didn't expect such strong interest."
The RedSayra variety
Consequently, the season for strawberries from the Basilicata region has begun smoothly, despite the difficult and uncertain economic context. "The market is moving slowly and it seems that consumers also want to save on food, including fruits and vegetables. Strawberry is not a commodity, but this beginning gives us hope. The fruit from the Metapontino area is very popular on the markets," said Maria Ferrara.
Right now, we can't deliver strawberries every day, but the mild temperatures and clear weather, which are factors needed for the fruit to ripen, were optimal during these autumn months. "We are still at the beginning of the season, which is why the supply takes place every 5-8 days. We always try to satisfy all customers and plan outgoing volumes nicely," concluded Ferrara.
