Peru's blueberry area increased by more than 1,000 hectares this year

So far in the 2022/23 campaign, the volume marketed by the country has grown by 31% compared to the same period of the previous campaign. The country's blueberry industry continues to grow, even though Proarandanos had warned there could be a possible crisis in the industry, as the international context could harm the future of this product.

This year the area devoted to this fruit in Peru has grown by more than 1,000 hectares, totaling 17,943 hectares. The sector expects to produce 275,000 tons of blueberries in this campaign, i.e. 25% more than in the previous campaign.

It should be noted that the rapid expansion of blueberry supply has affected its export price, which has fallen from 11.5 dollars per kilogram in 2013 to 5.6 dollars per kilogram in the first nine months of 2022. This problem becomes more relevant in the current context, in which production costs have increased, mainly because of the shortage of fertilizers and fuels. In fact, the Association of Agricultural Producers Guilds of Peru (AGAP) indicated that "many producers have had to sell at the same cost or even at losses to maintain their client portfolio."
