The current Dutch onion price increase is restricting exports. "Early last week, things were still going well. But during the week, prices - reportedly dictated by growers - rose by €0.03. The 60/80 grading suddenly cost €0.38, which caused buyers in, for example, the Far East to drop out," says Rene Tiggelman of the Handelsmaatschappij van Langevelde.
"There were still plenty of orders at €0.35, but we have yet to sell anything at €0.38. The big question is how exports to the Far East will go in the coming period. Much depends on those and Chinese onion prices. Dutch onion exports to Africa will probably continue until January. African countries have few alternatives and rely more on the Netherlands," continues the exporter.
"I hear some other European countries are sending onion to the Far East. We're awaiting demand from Spain, which has significantly fewer onions. They started cautious inquiries but have bought hardly any yet." Export onions' quality lasted well this season. "Our potato exports are also going reasonably well. We have several regular customers for these," concludes René.
