On November 15, China’s first avocado supply village by Fresh Hema was launched in Mangxin Village, Menglian, Yunnan. In the next three years, Fresh Hema will underwrite 100 million RMB of Menglian avocados, and the two parties will work together to create the first domestic ready-to-eat avocado supply chain.
In 2005, Pu'er Lvyin Biology Co., Ltd. introduced the Hass variety, which accounts for 80% of the world's total trade volume of avocado, to Menglian, China, for trial planting.
According to Qi Jiazhu, from the avocado supply village and chairman of Lvyin Biology, avocado trees are shallow-rooted crops that cannot stand wind, cold and heat. Menglian is located at 22 degrees north latitude, with an average annual temperature of 20°C and abundant rainfall. In addition to Menglian's unique karst landform, there are rocks with good water permeability under the fertile soil, which can not only ensure that the fruit trees can intake enough water but also ensure their root systems breathe normally. It is the most suitable place for growing avocados in China.
Comply with market demand and break the import monopoly
Chen Yanghui, Director of Hema Fruit Procurement and Sales, claims that that the transportation time of imported avocados is often more than 30 days, so American avocados have to be harvested when they are half or sixty percent ripe. Coupled with the "strict" determination of the quality and price ratio of avocados by the Chinese people, it has ushered in an opportunity for the rise of Menglian avocados.
"In order to let the public eat better quality and fresher avocados, Hema has set up ripening processing centers in Shanghai, Beijing, Chengdu, Xi'an and other cities. After harvesting the ripe avocados, they are transported to big cities for processing and putting on shelves. The whole process takes no more than 5 days. At the same time, Hema also added seasoning packets to Menglian ready-to-eat avocados to guide users to unlock different ways of consuming avocados."
In 2021, Menglian avocado sales hit new highs. Many domestic consumers also reported that compared with foreign avocados, Menglian avocado has a denser taste and better cost performance, which can be called "the light of domestic products".
Menglian avocados can be picked at 80% ripe
Today, with the support of Hema's stable orders, Menglian avocado growers have fully invested in the modernization of agriculture.
The local government official said that at present, more than 4600 hectares of avocado bases have been built in the local area. Menglian has become the "center" of avocado production in China, accounting for 80% of domestic avocado production.
