Favorable winter climate boosts Chilean cherry production

First Chilean sea freight cherries to land in the Chinese market in week 49

Recently, the new season of Chilean cherries landed in the Chinese market. As in previous years, once the first batch of fruits was launched, they immediately attracted widespread attention from consumers. Regarding the market prospect of Chilean cherries in China this season, FreshPlaza and Mr. Xie Jinshan, the general manager of Shenzhen Gold Anda Agricultural Technology Development Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "Gold Anda") conducted relevant market exchanges.

According to Xie: "Our first batch of cherries was sent to Shanghai in the 45th week. This batch of cherries is about 10 tons, and the variety is Royal Dawn. The sea shipment starts in the 46th week. It is expected that the first batch of cherries will arrive in China in the 49th week. In terms of production, the rainfall and cold air volume in the production area this winter are good. It is predicted that the production of Chilean cherries will increase by more than 15%. Based on container volume, the shipment should exceed 20,000 containers (40 feet). Judging from the current situation, the Chinese market prefers the Santina variety and other large-size fruits. "

In the past two years, due to the pandemic, the price of air and sea freight has remained high, which has greatly increased operating costs. Whether it is a packing plant or a fruit grower, the returns are not very satisfactory. "However, with the adjustment of China's pandemic prevention policy, logistics and customs clearance operations will be greatly improved, which is beneficial for the quality and sales of Chilean cherries. At the same time, the Spring Festival in 2023 will come earlier than in previous years. At that time, a large number of cherries will arrive in a concentrated manner, and sales will face greater challenges." Xie said.

When asked whether Chile's cherry planting area still showed a growing trend, he told FreshPlaza: "Due to the unsatisfactory return rate in the past two years, the number of nurseries reached its peak in 2021. At present, the new planting areas are all developing towards the early-ripening areas in northern Chile."

At present, Gold Anda's cherry planting area in Chile is about 500 hectares, with a total of 4 bases, respectively in the sixth and seventh provinces. The output of the orchards that have already borne fruit this year is expected to be about 1.5 million kg, and next year will reach 3 million kg The supply of this season to China will last until February 2023. At this stage, Gold Anda's Chilean cherries are mainly sold in the local markets and are sold in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Jiaxing, but in recent years, the proportion of e-commerce channels has increased.
