Export prices rose about 10% over the same period

The sharp drop in international freight rates boosts Chinese chestnut exports

In Shandong, one of the main chestnut-producing areas, the new supply season kicked off at the end of August and is expected to last until around May next year. Regarding this season's exports, Mr. Wang Pingyuan from Rizhao Wanhong FoodStuffs Co., Ltd. discussed the market situation with FreshPlaza.

This year, due to the frequent extreme weather conditions, the growth of most agricultural products around the world has been affected to varying degrees, including chestnuts. It is estimated that the overall chestnut production in Shandong will decrease by 30%-40%.

In the past two years, the export of chestnuts has been affected by multiple factors related to the pandemic, among which the soaring sea freight costs is one of the main reasons. "It is gratifying that from the second half of 2022, the situation has improved, and the overall freight rate in Shanghai has dropped significantly compared with the previous period, which is good for exporters. From the perspective of exports, the current export price of chestnuts is higher than that in the same period last year. It's up about 10%," Wang said.

He continued, "At this stage, we mainly export to Europe, the Middle East, the United States and Canada. Thanks to stable quality and sufficient supply, Chinese chestnuts still have a high share of the international market. In the past two years, the decline in export volume is mainly due to the impact of the pandemic, and it is also related to the overall slowdown of the global economy. "
