New flat nectarine variety coming to the US

Platty™ Moon is a flat, yellow fleshed nectarine variety that has been available in Europe since 2009. “It is a product of INRAE in France and has been available to growers in the EU through INRAE’s partners and sub licensees,” says Kevin Brandt with Brandt’s Fruit Trees in Washington. In addition to Europe, Platty™ Moon is available in many growing territories throughout the world.

Starting in spring of 2023, the trees will be commercially available in the US. Why is this a good time to introduce the variety in North America? “After a number of years under test and evaluation within our trial blocks, we decided that Platty™ Moon has strong commercial potential,” said Brandt. Consumer trials have shown that this selection is appreciated for its coloration and size, as well as its wonderful, sweet flavor.

Donut shape
What is unique about Platty™ Moon is its consumer friendliness. “It can be eaten in a ‘donut’ type fashion, allowing for full enjoyment without all of the mess,” said Brandt. “This selection develops a very attractive, deep red coloration on 80 to 90 percent of the fruit surface and achieves up to 15 brix sugar at peak maturity.” Although it is flat in shape, it has a large amount of flesh, providing for a fulfilling eating experience. It can be eaten in either firm or ripened texture. Unlike older flat peach/nectarine varieties, Platty™ Moon develops very little open calyx, or eyes, allowing for a high percentage of number 1 grade fruits.

Platty™ Moon ripens in mid-August in Washington State. “This is an opportune time for soft fruits and stone fruits as demand is usually high leading up to Labor Day, the first weekend of September.” Commonly, this holiday is spent outside with barbeques and other highly enjoyed foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables.
