Thousands of Tesco staff have been forced to take a large real-terms pay cut as the supermarket puts a squeeze on store managers while offering bigger wage rises for lower-paid workers. In the latest pay battle amid the cost of living crisis, the retailer’s team managers, who earn about £30,000 a year, say they have received as little as a 3% pay rise. The official rate of inflation is close to 10%, and expected to hit 11% this month.

The UK economy is currently seeing slow productivity growth, which is creating problems for both businesses and government. IGD’s latest Viewpoint report - Three productivity gaps for UK food and drink - reveals a number of challenges facing the supply chain and examines how these might be addressed, what the commercial benefits would be, and how to make the supply chain work better to benefit consumers. “This is not a new problem; productivity gains in the UK have been slow since the 2008-09 recession”, said James Walton, Chief Economist at IGD.

Aeon plans to triple Vietnam malls
Japanese retailer Aeon plans to triple the number of malls in Vietnam by 2025 as part of its expansion strategy to meet the needs of a growing middle class population. A report said the number of Aeon malls will nearly triple to 16 throughout Vietnam. Aeon has some 200 stores in Vietnam at present, including six shopping malls. A mall will be opened in the central town Hue in 2024. The company is also considering increasing its supermarkets in Hanoi to 100 by 2025, about 10 times the current number.

Despite the rise of e-commerce, Romanian consumers still prefer to make their grocery shopping in brick-and-mortar stores. As much as 66% of all consumer spending in physical stores in Romania went to groceries, while the regional average stands at 59%. The e-commerce sector has recently seen significant growth in the Central and Eastern European (CEE) region. The share of online sales in the region grew by 9 pp to 15% in the last 5 years, and is set to reach 20% in the next four years, according to a CBRE forecast.
