Potato harvest in Russia up 18% this season

Russian potato growers have harvested 4 million tons of tubers, 18% more than last year. The crop yield increased to 252,4 c/ha. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, this year its gross harvest in the organized sector will exceed 7 million tons.

Bryansk, Tula, Nizhny Novgorod, Moscow and Astrakhan regions have become traditional leaders in growing potatoes. These regions account for more than a third of total production.

In the future, the intensification of breeding work will help accelerate the development of domestic potato growing. In the Federal Scientific and Technical Program for the Development of Agriculture for 2017-2030, a corresponding subprogram was approved, for which almost 450 million rubles were allocated over two years. This year, within its framework, a new technology has been developed for the selection and seed production of potatoes. Also next year, a federal project for the development of vegetable and potato growing will start.
