Etienne Taitz - Afrex Kenya

Basil grown especially for pesto

Afrex Kenya exports agricultural products from South Africa to wholesalers and resellers from as far away as China, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, the USA, Canada, Europe, and the Middle East; these products include mini vegetables, edible and fresh cut flowers.

One specialized product offered by Afrex Kenya is a basil grown especially for making pesto.

"The growing process is exactly the same as for commercial basil production, but the irrigation cycle is different in order to harden the plant. The harvest is done at a slightly later stage as the mature plant produces a stronger leaf structure as opposed to a beautiful leaf. The leaf texture is more leathery, making it less prone to handling damage," explains Etienne Taitz from Afrex Kenya.

The post-harvest process is also slightly different as the crop is uprooted and sorted in Packhouse.

The farm grows 8-9 tons of regular basil monthly and 1 -2 tons of pesto basil.

The main markets for this basil are Italy, Germany, and the UK. The basil for pesto is available in 3kg and 5kg packs.
