The EU's tomato imports have fallen by 2.55% this year, from 2,670.34 million kilos in the 2020/2021 campaign to 2,602.13 million kilos in 2021/2022, according to data prepared by Hortoinfo from the Euroestacom statistical service (Icex-Eurostat). However, the evolution of the Community market's main tomato suppliers has been quite different.
The Netherlands supplied 22.49% of the tomatoes that the EU imported, making it the world's biggest supplier of tomatoes in the EU. During this last campaign, it has sold the EU 585.28 million kilos of tomatoes worth 1,214.6 million euros, at an average price of €2.07/kg, the highest price achieved by the three major suppliers (13.11% more expensive than Spain and 43.75% more expensive than Morocco). However, Dutch tomato sales to the EU by 24.67% this year.
Spain is the EU's second-largest tomato supplier after the Netherlands, with a 21.37% share. This year, it has supplied the EU with 556.08 million kilos worth 1,015.13 million euros, at an average price of 1.83€/kg, i.e., 27.08% more expensive than the tomatoes sold by Morocco. Its sales increased by 3.56% over the previous season.
Morocco ranked third, with a 19.99% share of the EU import market. The country has sold 520.09 million kilos worth 749.11 million euros at an average price of 1.44€/kg, increasing its export volume by 17.84%.
In the last marketing year, the total EU tomato imports amounted to 4,401.73 million euros and had an average price of 1.69 €/kg.
