Romania produced 600,550 tons of cabbage in 2020

Statistics of the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization show that Romania produced 600,550 tons of cabbage in 2020, making it the third largest producer in the European Union after Germany and Poland.

An article on Agroberichtenbuitenland confirms that in Romania, cabbage is one of the most widely grown vegetables, with 37,000 hectares of white cabbage grown annually, according to data from the National Statistics Institute. However, the area has dropped by 10,000 hectares compared to 2015.

Romanian annual cabbage consumption stands at about 800,000 tons, according to ZF calculations based on data from INS. Imports of cabbage, cauliflower and kohlrabi stood at €17.48 million in 2020 and increased to €23.78 million in 2021. At the same time, exports stood at €0.46 million in 2020 and €0.63 million in 2021.

Europe produced 9.6 million tons of cabbage in 2020, according to FAO data. The largest cabbage producer in Europe is Russia with 2.6 million tons, followed by Ukraine with 1.75 million tons (2020 data). This puts Romania in 5th place in Europe, accounting for more than 6% of total production.
