According to the chairman of the agricultural committee of Iran Chamber of Cooperatives, Iran is exporting dates to more than 85 countries, including in Europe, despite the sanctions which affect most parts of the economy. According to Arsalan Qassemi, Iran's date export is global, thanks to the quality and production of the different varieties of the fruit.
Medjool dates, chiefly grown in southeastern Kerman and Sistan and Baluchestan, are the most suitable for export. With their deep amber-brown color and crinkly skin, Medjool dates are one of the most popular, known for their large size, soft texture and rich flavor.
Still, , the most coveted and cultivated dates in the domestic market are Kabkab and Mozafati varieties. Qassemi said most dates are consumed inside the countries that produce them; while Iran exported 320,000 tons of dates last year, the rest of the product -estimated at around 1.1 million tons- was consumed domestically.
The main target markets of Iran for exporting dates are Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Turkey and UAE.
