Analysis of Apple Market Before and After the Mid-Autumn Festival

The volume of Fuji apples in cold storage is near the lowest point this year

The Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the most important festivals for apple sales. This year's Mid-Autumn Festival came a little early, on September 10th, the fifteenth day of the eighth lunar month, 11 days earlier than last year and 21 days earlier than the year before. What are the differences in the apple market before and after the Mid-Autumn Festival this year?

Early-ripening varieties
This year, in order to catch up with the inventory market during the Mid-Autumn Festival, fruit farmers in production areas generally take off bags early. On the whole, early-ripening varieties have gone through three stages:

The first stage is selling high at the beginning, The original price in Shandong production areas is generally 3-4 RMB/kg higher than the same period last year. Affected by the continuous rainy weather in the Shaanxi production area, the coloring of early Fuji is slow. This year's high-quality products are priced at 10-10.4 RMB/kg, and last year's opening price was 5.2-5.4 RMB/kg.

The second stage is the lowering price before the festival. After entering September, as the Mid-Autumn Festival is approaching, merchants in the Shandong production area are leaving one after another, fruit farmers begin to rest and prepare for the festival, and the quantity of products in the Zhaoyuan Biguo market has decreased significantly. Due to the high purchase price and the increase in the shipment volume in the Shaanxi production area, the price of early-ripening Fuji gradually declined before the festival.

The third stage is the post-holiday price recovery. The post-holiday market in Shandong production areas decreased in quantity, and the prices rebounded due to the high enthusiasm of customers in purchasing. For the Shaanxi production area, the enthusiasm of the merchants to inquire about the products after the festival is high, and the storage situation has increased. At present, fruit growers in some production areas of Luochuan have started to release their stocks of early-ripening Fuji, and the late-ripening Fuji in the production area has started to take off bags one after another. It is expected to take off bags on a large scale around September 20.

Fuji at stock
From the perspective of the remaining inventory, after the Mid-Autumn Festival in the 2021-2022 production season, the remaining amount of apples in cold storage nationwide is 39,500 tons, which has been at the lowest level in recent years. Judging from the weekly destocking volume, the weekly output of the 2021-2022 production season after the Mid-Autumn Festival is lower than in previous years. One of the main reasons for the low stock-out volume is that there are not many remaining sources of products, and most of the remaining sources are high-priced ones. The other is that early-ripening varieties are on the market ahead of schedule this year, grabbing a part of the market of stocked Fuji.

In general, the market conditions before and after the Mid-Autumn Festival this year are still very different. At present, the remaining supply of cold storage is at the lowest position this year, and there is little pressure on sales in the later period.
