Arson suspected in blaze that devastated Denny Mushroom’s warehouse

Denny is SA’s largest producer of fresh mushrooms and operates from three plants in Gauteng, Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. Some sources are speculating that a handful of workers, dissatisfied with the 7% annual pay increase that was accepted by the majority of their Denny Mushrooms colleagues, chose to vent their frustration by burning down the Shongweni plant in KwaZulu-Natal on Friday last week.

It all was suspicious, as reportedly it was the second fire at the plant in little over a week. The first one, in late August, was extinguished by fire fighters before it was able to cause much damage.

The extent of the damage and the cost of returning the plant to full production are not known. The company is owned by JSE-listed Libstar, owner of other well-known food brands such as Cook ‘n Bake, Goldcrest and Cartwrights. It also the SA representative for international brands such as Tabasco, Kiri and Robertsons.

The company did not elaborate on whether it believes disgruntled workers were behind the fire.
