Sandra Sitjar, from Cultivar:

"Pineapple volumes in Europe will recover in a few weeks, but prices will remain high"

At the moment the Spanish market is mainly supplied with Costa Rican pineapples. Volumes are becoming more limited and sales prices have risen considerably, with this upward trend expected to continue over the coming weeks.

"The shortage of maritime spaces since the beginning of the year and the natural flowering of recent weeks are causing a significant reduction in volumes in Europe compared to previous years," stated Sandra Sitjar, from Cultivar's Marketing department.

"This has allowed increasing pineapple prices but has led to a stagnation of consumption, especially noticeable in green pineapple. In a few weeks, volumes will recover. Prices, however, might not decrease much because of the dollar-euro parity, high production, and raw material costs, and the continuous increases in freight prices," she said.

"Meanwhile, the demand for colored pineapple in Spain continues to grow and consolidate to the detriment of green pineapple, which is increasingly residual," she added.

Cultivar markets about 7 million kilos of pineapple each year, mostly in the domestic market, through its main EXOTIC brand, as well as Fresh Valley and Fruitpoint Selección pineapples. It markets its green pineapple under the Del Monte brand.
