On September 8, the entry of Peruvian chilies and peppers into the Uruguayan market was formalized; an achievement that was made possible by the efforts made by the National Agricultural Health Service (Senasa) of Peru and the General Directorate of Agricultural Services of the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture, and Fisheries (MGAP) of Uruguay.
"The Uruguayan phytosanitary authorities established the phytosanitary requirements for the export of fruits of the genus Capsicum, such as peppers of various varieties, via resolution No. 938/022," the authorities stated.
"The production sites interested in exporting this product to Uruguay must be registered with SENASA. The shipments must have the phytosanitary certification to export, be inspected in Peru, and have a phytosanitary import authorization from Uruguay."
Agro-export growth
Peruvian Capsicum already has access to the US, Germany, France, Netherlands, Canada, United Kingdom, Puerto Rico, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Denmark, Costa Rica, Mexico, Panama, Guatemala, Spain, Italy, and Kosovo.
According to official data from SENASA, in 2021, the country certified 33,120 tons of fresh and dried Capsicum products to be exported. The main destination was Mexico with 39%, followed by the United States with 30%, Spain with 27%, and Guatemala, Italy, Kosovo, and Chile accounted for the remaining 4%.
"According to projections, the opening of this new market will allow Peru to consolidate itself as one of the main exporting nations of this product worldwide, mainly benefitting the producers of Lambayeque, La Libertad, Piura, Lima, Ica, Tacna, and Arequipa."
