Peruvian tangerines enter the Chinese market every year in April, but the peak period falls between July and September. Mr. Li Zonglin of Guizhou Shou Yang Agricultural Products Co., Ltd. recently talked about Chinese market conditions for Peruvian tangerines.
"Current data shows that the delivery volume of Peruvian tangerines is about 60% smaller than last year. The decline this year is mainly because the supply volume last year was excessive. Market supply far exceeded market demand, which caused the price to plummet. This year the importers were more careful, so the import volume declined, and the price opened significantly higher than last year. Product movement is also much better this year," added Mr. Li.
"The beginning of the season has now passed and we are in the middle of the sales season. The price dropped by about 15%-20% compared to the opening price. Still, both price and product movement are excellent at the moment, because the delivery volume is small. In addition, Mid-Autumn Festival is almost upon us. The festival always stimulates fruit sales. However, domestic tangerines and other fresh fruits also enter the Chinese market around this time of the year, which creates competition for Peruvian tangerines."
Last year, many of the Peruvian tangerines arrived with product quality issues such as greasy spots and black spots. The reason for these problems was a delay in transport. Peruvian tangerines normally reach China in 28-30 days, but last year transport often took as much as 2 months. The product quality of tangerines suffered in transit. This year conditions improved and delays have been minimal. The tangerines that arrive in China are in good condition.
"Peruvian tangerine varieties are selected with care. The new 'Tango' tangerine variety has attracted much attention in the last few years. The advantage of this tangerine is that the sweet flavor is not followed by a tart aftertaste. Many Peruvian tangerines have a slightly tart flavor, but the flavor of Tango tangerines is pure and sweet. In addition, Tango tangerines are seedless, brightly colored, and easy to peel. The price of Tango tangerines is around 10%-15% higher than the price of other tangerine varieties, but product movement does not suffer. We expect this variety to take over the market. However, the supply season is somewhat short compared to other varieties. The production season only lasts one month after the tangerines completely change their color," explained Mr. Li.
