Robbert van Essen, Yex:

"Turkish fig supply gets going after hot market"

"The fig market has been pretty hot recently. Brazil stopped a little earlier than expected, so it became a true demand market," says Sourcing Manager Robbert van Esse of Yex in the Netherlands. "That continued for two weeks. Customers from all over were trying to find figs, and we got the craziest orders."

"At that time, Israel was the closest follow-up country, but they were just starting up, and local demand was high too. We managed to fly in some early green figs from Turkey. By switching quickly, we at least secured our volumes and could supply all our customers."

"By now, the Turkish season is well underway. Prices were around €10 and higher, but they're dropping again. Figs arrive in the Netherlands by truck from Turkey and are available mainly in sizes 16 to 25. We're in full discussion with our clients regarding upcoming promotions," Robbert concludes.
