Logistics crisis and Ukraine war will affect Ecuador’s 2022 banana season

The logistics crisis has produced various effects for the world’s industries, especially for the fruit and vegetable sector, leading to an increase in prices and freight rates.

Richard Salazar, executive director of the Banana Marketing Association, commented that “due to overcrowding at important ports, especially China, the lack of containers and shipping locations was also evident during the months of January, February and March.”

Asked about the effects on banana shipments resulting from the war between Ukraine and Russia, Salazar explained: “The war between Russia and Ukraine (markets that represented 25% of total banana exports) that began on February 24, 2022, deepened the crisis the region was already going through.”

“Between January and February 2022, Russia was exporting an average of 8.1 million boxes per month, fruits that were mostly contracted. 929,000 boxes were exported to Ukraine (mainly spot) in January 2022 and 637,000 boxes in February 2022 The sanctions imposed on Russia affected export logistics due to a lack of shipping spaces and some that were on the spot tripled their value, costing up to $15,000 per container for freight.
