Italy: Nova Coop announces bonus for workers
Italian consumer cooperative Nova Coop has allocated a €200 bonus for approximately 5,000 employees and workers on a continuous basis, for a total value of approximately €1mln. Allocated by the Nova Coop chairman, in agreement with the board of directors, the bonus aims to help meet rising costs of goods and services that is eroding the purchasing power of families.

Minipreço shutters 25 stores in Portugal
Spain’s DIA Group has closed 25 Minipreço stores in Portugal, resulting in the loss of approximately 159 jobs, due to ‘complex macroeconomic scenario with pressure on costs and prices’. The retail group said the closures are ‘duly framed in the effort to adapt, modernise and balance the operations of DIA Portugal, with the aim of better preparing the company for current and future challenges arising from the current economic situation in the country,’ according to media reports. The unions claim that the job losses were ‘avoidable’ and that the financial situation of the company is the result of bad management’, according to a report in Economia Online.

Malaysian Bulk Carriers proposes to diversify into grocery business
Malaysian Bulk Carriers Bhd (MBC) has entered into a conditional collaboration agreement with Tunas Manja Sdn Bhd (TMSB) to undertake grocery retail and related businesses, in a move to diversify its revenue streams. TMSB is principally involved in the management of supermarket chain stores, including general trading of daily necessities and food products to consumers. It operates a chain of 85 supermarkets and grocery stores under the “TMG” brand throughout Malaysia, with the majority of the stores located in the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia.

Israeli food delivery app Haat joins Glovo, Jumia, enters Morocco
The Israeli delivery app Haat intends to increase its operations in Morocco as part of its aim to expand outside of Israeli markets and into the MENA region. In the upcoming years, the food delivery business hopes to serve thousands of towns. The Haat is adamant about not just reaching cities but also rural areas. The Israeli business, whose name in Arabic means “Bring”, hopes to become a significant regional and global player in the years to come.

Australia: ACCC clears Woolworths acquisition of MyDeal
Following an extensive review, the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) says it will not oppose Woolworths’ proposed acquisition of MyDeal. The competition regulator concluded that both businesses are not “particularly close competitors” and will not substantially lessen competition in any of the relevant markets.

Deliveroo Singapore partners TreeDots to help restaurants reduce their carbon footprint and operating costs amid inflation
Deliveroo Singapore announced its partnership with local social enterprise TreeDots. Established in 2017, TreeDots was founded on the idea that ugly or unwanted food is just as delicious and nutritious as perfect-looking produce. Restaurants can place orders directly on TreeDots' online marketplace and save up to 90% on food procurement costs on various quality products, from meat such as chicken, seafood, and poultry to fruits like avocados and vegetables such as broccoli.

M&S teams up with AgriSound to boost pollinator activity on British farms
M&S announced a three-year collaboration with agri-tech start up AgriSound, designed to help farmers better manage pollinators and increase crop yields. The collaboration will see two M&S Select Farms, Plumford in Kent and G’s Growers in Cambridgeshire, install in-field sensors for three years, allowing them to track the number of pollinators visiting their farm in real-time and target specific interventions for improving numbers.

Kiwi online supermarket Supie raises NZ$3.9mln to champion local producers
An online groceries startup that set out to break New Zealand’s supermarket duopoly has raised NZ$3.9mln. The startup, founded in 2021, opened its latest funding round in June through Snowball Effect with a target of raising $2.5mln and a cap of $3m, but extended the raise due to overwhelming interest. The funds will be used for Supie to support its Auckland expansion, technology development, marketing initiatives to drive membership growth and working capital to continue to fund expansion, inventory, people and operations.

Nigeria: FoodCo launches 16th outlet in Ikoyi, Lagos

UK: New initiative shows Dundee shoppers how to get £36 each month off their groceries
Shoppers at a Dundee supermarket have become the first in Scotland to benefit from a project highlighting payments they can receive towards their groceries. Social Security Scotland has launched a partnership with Asda to promote Best Start Foods. Certain families can receive up to £36 every month on a pre-paid card to buy healthy goods like eggs, milk, fruit, vegetables and pulses. The initiative launched at the Asda Milton of Craigie supermarket - the first in a series of in-store events.

US: Workers at downtown Minneapolis Trader Joe's vote to become 2nd in nation to unionize
Employees at the Trader Joe’s in downtown Minneapolis have voted to unionize, making them the second location in the country to do so. The union, Trader Joe’s United, was formed after a 55-5 vote was certified by the National Labor Relations Board.

US: Grocery Outlet, DoorDash offer on-demand grocery delivery
Extreme-value retailer Grocery Outlet Holding Corp. has teamed up with DoorDash to offer on-demand grocery delivery from more than 398 Grocery Outlets locations across the country. Now DoorDash customers can order groceries on-demand from local Grocery Outlet stores through the DoorDash marketplace app or website.

US: Instacart creates its own version of DoubleDash
Instacart has launched a new feature, known as OrderUp!, that lets customers order items from two retailers but only pay one delivery fee, the e-commerce company announced. After placing a grocery order from one retailer, customers will have a limited time to shop from an additional retailer without incurring a second delivery charge. The feature comes at a time when third-party e-commerce providers are refining and rolling out new abilities for customers, workers and grocers.
