Some 25 counties across New York have been experiencing moderate drought conditions this summer, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. As of August 9, conditions in Monroe, Ontario, Livingston, Wyoming, Orleans, Tompkins, Cortland, Schuyler and Tioga counties were not in the drought stage, but were labeled as “abnormally dry,” as were southern Cayuga, northern Yates, northern Steuben, eastern Chemung, and portions of Genesee, Allegany and Seneca. Western Chemung, most of Allegany, portions of Seneca, Genesee and Yates and the southern half of Steuben County were labeled “moderate drought.”
For local farmers attempting to get enough produce to market, that has meant turning to irrigation to maintain production. Among some of the crops which need more rainfall this month are corn and soybeans. This means that for many farmers, dry weather has soured this year's sweet corn crop.
